Church Update and Encouragement
Encouragement
Dear Church Family,
When we follow Jesus, we may find ourselves in some unexpected challenges. They can even make us fearful, and Jesus encourages us to believe in Him during those “great storms.” For example, in Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus encouraged his disciples to have faith during a time of fear:
"And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, 'Save us, Lord; we are perishing.' And he said to them, 'Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?' Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, 'What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?'"
Most of the disciples were experienced fishers who had successfully navigated many storms. But this one was unique, powerful, and life-threatening. Despite all their experience, physical strength, and knowledge of sea, they realized they were not in control of the situation and were scared.
2020 has undoubtedly been a year where we have experienced “great storms”: the pandemic, financial losses, racial conflicts across our nation, and most recently, an unprecedented thunderstorm that has caused overwhelming fires with tragic destruction.
Jesus encourages us not to fear but have faith—faith in Him. We can help ourselves by reflecting on this Scripture and answering the disciples’ question. “What sort of man is this…”. And take comfort in this: Jesus is with us in the storm and as the Creator of the universe (Colossians 1:16) has power over anything we may face. Jesus is the God-man!
In Christ,
Pastor Steve
