Church Update and Encouragement

Dear Church Family,

This past Thursday, our church hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive for the first time, and personally, this was the first time I have ever donated blood. We did this to support our greater community because COVID-19 has caused fewer donation facilities to be available, resulting in a blood shortage. As Christians, we all know the importance of blood for atonement of sins. The Bible speaks of

“the life of the flesh is in the blood,… for it is the blood that makes atonement” Leviticus 17:11

and when we take communion, the cup represents Jesus’ blood that was shed for us—for the sins of humanity.

“And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'” Matthew 26:27-28

We also hosted this event as a small way to care for our community. I noticed on the arm of my phlebotomist a “fish” (Christian) symbol. I shared with him my observation, and he said there was a date within the symbol, which I did not see. It was the day he attributes God freeing him from drug addiction! We then began to talk about other spiritual matters as he wasn’t involved in a local church (but was watching Saddleback church on Sundays). I had an opportunity to encourage him in the faith as he had a lot of questions. Afterward, at the recovery table, I had a chance to engage an Alameda HS student who was volunteering to help. The point is there are opportunities for us to engage and encourage people even during this time of shelter-in-place. Look out for some opportunities this week!

In Christ,
Pastor Steve
